    Hi. I'm setting up a new tank for Multi shell dwellers. Does anyone know where I can find escargot shells around Cape Town?

    @WernerP is sorting me out. But it is quite complicated to get them down to the Western Cape! Hopefully they will arrive healthy.

    But perhaps a restaurant in the area that has them on the menu may be able to help

    That is a long hard struggle, I managed to get my first lot of shells from yuppie chef. But that was the last of it. the problem is that they do not import well so wholesalers are not keen on importing them. I did manage to get some original shells that the multis use to breed in from Lake Tanganyika

    Try melkbos strand. There's lots of shells you can use for shell dweller cichlids

    At least 1 per adult, but two or even 3 is a better idea. Will give them a chance to choose the one they happy with, escape any aggression from others in the group, and provide shelter for fry.

    I have been falling in love with them on the forum but have never had the opportunaty to watch them in someone's tank in person

    The answer is both.
    The miniature shell dwelling Lamprologus live in the shells permanently.
    But there are a few obscure species that visit the shell beds just to breed
