Shattering reality

Hey guys,

Well, as I have gotten more and more into the hobby of fishkeeping, I think I have become more and more aware of the nature conservancy of fish habitats etc. I think 90% of you will also agree and feel the same as I do.

I did a bit of googling and fish-site hopping this morning, and cane to a shattering reality that there are fish out there in LPS that are actually collected from the wild to support our hobby.

For me the ethics of collecting from the wild to support my hobby seems a little questionable, but keeping fish that are bred, and brought up in an aquarium situation is more acceptable.

Double standards?

How do you guys feel?

Put it this way... if you were given a secret location of some nice tropical fish in the wild, would you go and collect some for yourself, or keep the secret quiet?

I know a thread on ethics can be dangerous, because your ethics are very different to mine, but it would be interesting to here your guys and gals viewpoints?

Nice poster of the Ornamental Fish of Rio Negro - and we see so many of these in our shops ... What from this list is locally bread and sold into the hobby market in SA? I would think only a hand full if any.

The nice thing about project piaba is that they are aiming for a SUSTAINABLE ornamental wild fish trade - I think that is more the way to go, there will always be a market for wilds, let that market be sustainable, and at the same time do good things for the trade as a whole...

 

Yeah, I agree with that... that is kinda like captive breeding philosophy, but in the wild.
