Setting up hospital/quarantine tank.

I will be getting a female convict in the next few days that is a bit 'beat up'.
I intend putting her in a hospital/quarantine type tank for about two weeks or so.
This is how I am planning to setup the tank up with regards to water. Any suggestions would be welcome.
I will be using a sponge filter from an established tank.
Water will be 50% from established tank and 50% dechlorinated tap water.
Will the established filter together with the 50/50 water be fine?
I obviously don't want to go through the whole process of cycling the tank before I introduce her to it.
Any advice would help.

Sounds good. Just make sure that there is no hectic current in the tank and maybe add a little bit of salt to the tank as well. This will help the slime coat and help protect her from infection.

 

That was going to be one of my next questions. I have never used salt in a tank before. What type of salt do I use, how much do I use, and how often should I use it?

Just use it once and with every water change...

You buy the salt from the LFS, do not use Table Salt!!! Not sure of the correct name of the salt...

You don't use much. I use 1 LEVEL table spoon for every 80l.

 

If I set up the tank about 24 hours before I get the fish, then that should be fine?
I don't have to worry about all the good bacteria dying in the 24 hour period due to not having a 'food' source?

 

This is probably a late reply, but yes Darryn, that set up shoudl work out nicely. The bacterial should be fine. As long as ou using 50% exist tank water, and 50% DECHLORED water, there should be enough food for the bacteria in the 50% tank water to sustain the colony for that period of time.

Just for extra measure, you could however have added a flake or 3 of fish food
