    Hello Prof!

I realise this could be slightly outside your typical area of expertise but any advise would be greatly appreciated...

I've used Sera Toxivec in some of my freshwater fish holding tanks. I want to use one of those tanks for marine corals and inverts. I'm aware that this product is not suitable for planted aquaria as more sensitive plants do not tolerate toxivec. I cant find info on the net so please could you advise:
    1. is Sera Toxivic safe for marine inverts and corals
    2. does this chemical become adsorbed by the aquarium silicone and could it then leach out with time back into the tank
    3. is an aquarium, washed and dry, that this product was previously used in safe for a marine invert and coral setup

    TIA...

    Hi Ahmed,

I fear that I am completely out of my depth here. I do not know this product and I also do not keep marines as a result of which I do not know this product and do not know anything about this product.

What does the label say, I mean what is this product supposed to do and does it state what it contains? Perhaps I help on the basis of this information.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    no problem Prof...

Unfortunately I dont have one of these with me to check the packaging... I've checked the sera website and it does not list the ingredients, typically the guide online is the same as in the box...I'll post on one of the marine forums and hopefully someone has experience with this product in a marine tank.

thank you for taking the time to reply...

I use toxivec when landing new fish and introducing to aquariums...

    it removes:
    -nitrite
    -ammonia/ammonium
    -chlorine (bonus feature)

it also helps with the fish mucous membrane, binds heavy metal and stabilizes pH...

    Ok,

I do have some experience of these substances.

The components that remove the ammonia and nitrite are actually mind oxidants whilst the chlorine is removed by oxidizing it to chloride. Such components should be OK even with some pretty sensitive organisms.

Substances which help with the mucous membranes normally are poly alchohols and these actually coat the fishes thereby protecting areas that have been injured and on which the natural slime layer is damaged. I would expect that such components could bind to the silicon rubber and such components may be a problem with inverts and corals. You need to find out more about the specific products that toxivec contains as this could have an influence on inverts and corals.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
