    Schalk,

If I recallo correctly, this is a farily new tank set up?

Research Diatoms. It's not really an algae but a small microscopic organism. It'll go away. It happens whenever you set up a new tank.

I've reports that it's because the glass is leeching something, or the silicon is leeching something... But I really don't know where it comes from... I've learnt not to trust internet sources 100%... the fact is that it will go away.

As far as I can recall... if it doesn't go away, it's because your lighting might be too dim.

hi Schalk. Brown algae is common in new tanks. It normally happens when the 'cycle' starts kicking in. Zoom is right in a way that leaching silica from new glass can make it worse, but an 'old glass' tank newly set up will also do it. It is due mainly to phosphates and nitrates in water. You can use your fingers to rub it of plant leaves and a magnet to get it off glass. Do 30% WC 3 to 4 times a week. That shud get rid of it. Also check ur 'daytime' hrs on tank. More than 12 hrs a day wil have that effect, especially with a 10000k light

Schalk.. I wouldn't waste time or money on any chemical for this brown algae. As I said before, it is not a true algae... soe the algovac will not have any effect on it.

It can be removed very easily by hand (on plants), with a nail brush, (on rocks) and magnet cleaner (on glass). I've heard it's the from the silica from the glass... so there might be a common denominator here. But I've even had it in my new tanks I've set up with old tanks.

It comes part and parcel of setting up a tank, and unfortunately, this isn't something the LPS stores warn you about.

To be honest, i dont know algovac. . .I tend to favour adding as little chemicals, no matter what I'm trying to achieve. I believe that somehow most thing can be solved without chemicals. Did you maybe add some ph adjusting chemical to the tank? Some ph-minus additives use phosphates to take ph down. This also results in brown algae. I suppose u have fish in that tank? Try cleaning as much of it by hand as u can, doing the water changes and maybe limiting the lighting on there 4 2 or 3 days to 5 or 6 hrs. I'm sure that will clear it up.
