Just go for The original...Aquaclear by Hagen....Expensive,yes....but have one that has performed for me for close on 20 years with just one impeller replacement... Most LFS's should carry them,or at least be able to order you one...

Nope, once the U-bend is primed(no air lock) it will stay that way....even if the power is off...

Sweet, I dont own 1 yet. The Aquaclear is my fav, to buy. I will probably understand the u-bend, when I bought one.

I also asked an electrician, if there is way I can stop the pump from switching itself on when the power starts again.
    He said I can use a rely ( 9 or 11 point ) with a start switch.

    Thanx, I'll buy the aquaclear

Below my success rating of HOBs I am actually using at the moment - and the self prime after a power failure.

    Cascade 200 - 100%
    Aquaclear 70 - 100%
    Atman HF0300 - 100%
    Dolphin H100 - 5%

Interesting - with a water change self restart, the numbers change a bit (in this case no water in the U-Tube - only some around the impeller.)

    Atman HF0300 - 100%
Cascade, Aquaclear - 30% (real hit and miss - I am now in the habit of just starting them up with loads of water in the pot)
    Dolphin H100 - 0%

in all fairness I do run sponges on the intakes so I am probably operating them out-side of the design specification.

Thanx for the help, still convinced that the aquaclear will work the best. Azurekoi and f-fish confirmed that its the best.

I use a eheim HOB. Also pricey but they super quite and efficient. Nothing wrong with aqua clear though. Good quality, use to have the smallest one in the range. Never had any issues with it.

For completeness of picture, I don't see it listed.

    Look into the JEBO range.
I once outfitted an entire shop. ie >40 HOB.
edit: AND a few smaller Discus/AngelFish hatcheries..and NOW Marine fish Hatcheries.

Reason; it was the BEST- priced, decent quality brand which maintained sufficient water in it's Filter Well,to restart after power-outs.
:sick:Think back a few years, with ALL of the regular Eskom "reliability", and scheduled power-cuts.

I have owned and used all the brands above. Hagen AquaClear can't be faulted
I am still using , or have spare units >25y old. Takes alot to burn out, when dry...
..BUT they DO lose prime more than Jebo on restart.

    To add:
Also look at the brittle plastic used in some of the others mentioned.

Eheim, AquaClear, Jebo are far better in impact resistance

While on the topic of HOB's ... saw a LFS had just received a shipment of Marina SLIM HOB's ... anybody using it yet. I might just want to get one for an up coming project.
Sale blurb is something like :

"The filter comes equipped with an adjustable flow control.... Its motor is submerged in the tank for a quiet operation and an easy start-up since no priming is required.... Includes 4 filter cartridges; 2 Bio-Carb and 2 Bio-Clear that contain Ceramitek, which is engineered to optimize biological filtration, for a healthy aquarium...."
