Seasonal change and photoperiod

Hey guys, so it is becoming winter now and i was wondering about adjusting the photo period of my tanks, currently at around 16 on - 8 off. I do know that in the biochem lab we adjust the photo period to around 14 - 10. This along with the change in temperature primes the plants and set in motion the winter flowering ones. It also enables the summer flowering plant to reduce their carbon fixation and respiration rates to conserve some energy, a sort of resting phase. Now my question is would this change in photo period be beneficial for my aquarium as well?

 

I don't know about adjusting the photoperiod for winter, but I do know most of us on the site run our lights for around 10 hours a day. More than that and algae start to take over.

 

I also normaly had it set on the 10h cycle, but have moved up my times as my plant growth has become suficient to combat the algea for nutrients, aswell as some catfish that just remove some of the algea that does set in. Have been running my system like this for about 2 months and havn't as of yet seen algea. Also got some purigen in my sump, which seems to do wonders with the amonia
