    Ryno and Happyboy,

In general what you say Ryno is correct, in other words that plant ferts are safe to use with fishes, but you need to be careful when you make such a statement. Fertilizers cannot be added in large amounts if you keep fishes, you must use them according to instructions and what you also need to know is how hard your water is or else you could be adding far too much of the one or other component and then this definitely is VERY negative for fishes.

It also depends on which fishes you are keeping. If you are keeping fishes that can tolerate harder water then you can use more fertilizer but if you want to keep softwater fishes such as angels, many of the tetras and even discus, then you cannot add so much fertilizer.

What I also want to add is that we have had very extensive discussions on the safety of some of the products used for plant feeding, products which add carbon to the water for the plants to use and you can read some of this here: http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/s...uteraldehyde)/page15&highlight=glutaraldehyde

So, bottom line is you need to do your homework and plant ferts will very definitely have a negative influence on your fishes if you do not use them according to instructions and according to your water and your fishes. This is not so straightforward.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Ah, ok - now I get it! Well, if it is only the gups then I doubt it was the fertz. I shall add that although guppies are supposed to be bulletproof, we have had quite a few cases of guppies dying for no apparent reason and reached the conclusion that they're not always as hardy as they ought to be.
