Scaling down to three display tanks

After many years of fishkeeping I decided to stop the breeding for a while and scale down. In the past I tried to breed with bettas but I had NO successful spawns. I don`t know if I did something wrong,if the water I have is just not suitable for breeding or whatever the reason is but I decided to keep three 90cm tanks. One tank contains angles, rummy noses, x-rays and black widows. In the other 90cm is the bettas. I got two males and two females. (seperated of coarse!) I am actually looking for some fish to keep with bettas. I don`t know what fish yet. (not guppies. All my guppies died and I don`t know why) I was thinking of plates, mollies, neons, congo tetras, white clouds or endlers. (Not sword tails. There are far to aggresive.) Any help? In the last 90cm I don`t have any fish yet. I am for a little help. I want a tank with only one typ of fish. I am looking for a hardy fish type that is not too expensive. The types that interest me are butterfly fish(but I don`t know if it is a good choice, I heard they have HUGE mouths) chocolate gouramis (they will have the whole tank to themselves if I decided upon them) kribs, splashing teteras or a tiger barbs. Butterfly fish - huge mouths don't matter if they're going in their own tank with no small fish to snack on! They are very hardy apparently. You wouldn't be able to have too many in a 90 litre though, probably only 2 - because they're territorial. You could have them on top and Kribs as well, I think. Chocolate gouramis are the OPPOSITE of hardy, but not impossible. I've had some for about a year now, so if you do decide to go that route feel free to ask me anything.

I once had choclates who didn`t survived even one week- but I had them in a tank with black widows, x-rays and rummy noses. I heard they want very acidic water and LOTS of hiding places. If I am going to give them a go, it will be ONLY them in one 90cm tank. Is it best to start with one male and one female? How must the tank set up be more or less?
I also wanted hatchets but I heard they get white spot VERY quickly.
