    I received a batch of Scalare angels from @Dirk Bellstedt towards the end of last year. I split the group into 3 equal batches in separate tanks to grow them out. I have had 3 previous spawnings of these fish already, but wasnt too concerned as I am trying to get the fish to optimum size before breeding. However, I had another spawning on Saturday 30/06/12 and this time I will grow out a batch of these fry. The parents ( no doubt their first attempt at being parents ) have been awesome. They have guarded their eggs, and now wrigglers to a T. I have just placed a divided into this tank to separate the rest of the angels from the 'nest' and let the parents conitnue looking after their young instead of being stressed having to fight off the other fish. The wrigglers are to be seen directly above the female.

    I put this success of first time, non egg/fry eating parents, down to the fact that these fish were themselves not artificially raised when they were born. What a pleasure obtaining livestock from a reputable breeder.

    Excellent!
    Well done. Angels are always nice fish to breed.

    I have always wanted to breed Angels! The closest I ever got was they would lay and fertilize the eggs and sometimes even hatch, but then would never find the fry or perhaps they ate the eggs. Was always tough being at varsity and only coming home the odd weekend. Your Angels are stunning and congrats on the spawn!

    Quick update

    The pair have been separated by a divider from the rest of the group and have watched over their young superbly. The wrigglers have absorbed their yolk sacs, so should go free swimming today and then its bbs all the way.

    @Rory

    I decided to move the parents out of the tank with the rest of the angels and they are now in their own breeding tank. The fry are in a container and im rearing them separately so if not from this initial spawn, then you are most certainly welcome to the pick of the next batch. Anticipating another spawn from this pair in a fortnight.

    How many you looking for? :D

    Ok, I moved this pair into a separate tank, bare bottom, sponge filter and upturned flower pot. They laid again yesterday late afternoon. Only a few eggs not fertile.

    Thanks for the kind comments, but Prof Dirk deserves all the credit here, as I obtained these fish from him.

    The fish on the left is the female and the one on the right is the male. I dont rely on any hit and miss recipes to sex my angels. I have them in large groups and let them pair off naturally then place them in breeding tanks. When they spawn the males tube is pointy and the females egg depositor is longer and thicker and almost like the shape of an upside down volcano to explain it best.

    I recently had my first discus spawn and it was very clear which is the male and which is female now.

    Hope this helps

    Mom and fry 290712.jpg

    Fry took their lift off yesterday and are now free-swimming and eating bbs. Here they are pictured with mom.

    Once again, thanks @Dirk Bellstedt for supplying these truly amazing angels. I know ive told you before that each time I see your angels, its hard to decide which fish I prefer more : angels or discus!! The parenting trait of these fish has been 100% from the start.
