    Hi everyone,

Has anyone got any experience with this species? I am hopefully getting some on Friday. This is one of three species that I have decided I want to keep. I am told they all look like females but I have read that young males also look like females so I will just buy about 10 or so and hope for the best. Planning on a species tank but as always I prefer to buy a few and breed them into a large number of fish.

    Any thoughts?

Never heard of ths before but being endangered? I think breeding would be a good effort :)

Fish will definitely be hard to sex until mature, I thought I had 2 female polypterus for a while but one suddenly took on the massive male anal fin

The challenge is there isnt clear info on how they like to breed. Some sites claim egg scatters, others claim they use leaves from plants like anubais. Others claim spawning mops / floating plants. So it is going to pretty much be trial and error. But I am getting ahead of myself. First I need a pair.

Got my fish today. 9 in total - all the shop had. They are looking okay. Eating and active. They look quite young in my opinion - probably a few months old. They came right up to the glass when I fed them daphnia. Will post pics in a few days when they colour up a bit hopefully. They may still be too young to colour up soon.

Happy to report that all 9 are still alive and doing well. Tried taking a pic but my phone camera isnt great. Will try tomorrow with a proper camera and see how it comes out.

ADA in the cpd tank. Fluorite on the sawbwa tank.

The older cpds tend not to come to the glass. Its the ones that I bred and raised that are unafraid. The ones in the pic are probably only about a quarter of my cpds

Awesome. I have a love hate relationship with flourite, grows plants well but gets all gunky real fast.

    You have more? Whoah :D

So the sawbwas have started to colour up. On some of the fish their head and tips of their tail has gone a very slight red colour. Fed them some BS this afternoon and just finished feeding them some daphnia.

So....fry that hasn't gone free swimming 5 days after removing adults from the breeding tank. In total I have now got 3 fry spread over 2 breeding tanks. Hoping for many more over the next few days.

Looks like there are only 2 fry left - at one stage I counted 5. But these fry look like proper little fish now. Its only been 2 weeks since I first noticed them. I have an anubais tank - over the weekend I moved the bettas out, dropped the water level and placed a pair of adult sawbwas in the tank. I will remove them on Thursday night and hope to see many fry appearing in the week after their removal.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Very nice idea to drop the water level.

@MariaS - thats how it goes with the egg scatterers. Unfortunately losses do occur in the fry. But on a better note I found another fry so that makes 3 left. These little guys seem to prefer to hide in moss rather than stay midwater like my cpd fry do. And I know its a different fry from the first two as i have them in a tank with 2 divisions. 2 are on the one side and the 3rd little guy is on the other.

Counted 4 fry that are about a month old from my original spawn. Very happy with that. And saw a fry on the glass of my anubais tank earlier tonight as well as a free swimming fry. Hoping for a lot from this tank as its a lot bigger than my spawning tanks. As i said in previous posts these little guys tend to hide in the plants so its quite difficult to tell numbers until they are a fair size. Even now the 4 from the origional spawn still manage to hide effectively enough.
