Had the great opportunity this past December holiday to go snorkeling in Moz (Paindane) with my folks.

Was the 2nd time we snorkeled the reef. The last time was 2 years ago.

The plunge into the water awoken a sense of sadness as we approached the reef. Where coral and life was all around there was just bare topped rocks.

The only place were a few pieces of coral were left is where people could not trample the coral to death on the bottom and sides of the rock.

There were a very limited amount of fish to see. A few Parrot fish, and a few other species but the reef was in a very sad state. Destruction was all around. There were no clown fish left, no display of colours that flooded your senses. Nothing to jolt your heart to say, wow I went, and I saw the most amazing display of life. Nothing. Just destruction.

And the cause? Humans. Not the crap of global warming. People. And not only the locals that are killing every little piece of life out of the reef, but south africans as well.

And how do I dare say that? Because people will go and stand on the reef. Not on the sandy spots on the reef, but on the rocks. Killing off any bit of soft and hard coral.

I just hope and pray that the reef will still be there some day, and that one day I can take my kids snorkeling to show them an amazing display of underwater life and not death...

A very upsetting post to read. I fear similar things are happening at other places also. Education is the only answer.

It is sad but the reality of life, as we know it. Many people will also take a small piece of reef to remind them of their trip, without thinking about the time it took to grow. Same as with people visiting caves. Education will never be enough, they won't care. Treat them as poachers and see what happens.
