Today I read in our local news paper that there was an oscar tank for sale. So I phoned the number and got through to the owner of the tank. They said it was a very big tank and that I should come take a look and make an offer. Being more interested in the tank than the oscar's I took a drive through to their farm. When I got there she took me into this poorly lit room and pointed to this dark corner. Could hardly see , but there stood some ones real horrible idea of a custom tank(150lt if...) with four young red oscars(about 20cm in length) in it.

The gravel was brown with waste(from what I could see the gravel was light grey), the glass is thick with algae, the internal cannister filter is so clogged up that it is barely pumping water never mind filtering anything. The one actively moving oscar looks like it is missing an eye. Conditions are just appauling.

So tomorrow I'm going to make them an offer on the tank just to get those poor fish away from there and I have a temp 250lt tank which I can use for them at the moment until my 400lt tank is complete and I can shift them to there.

But for the likes of me how can people be so cruel to such awsome fish and still have the cheek to allow people to come and look and put in an offer. Pity we cant swear on TASA because theres a couple words I would have put into these paragraphs to describe these folk.

I would simply report them to the spca and make sure it gets confiscated. Go pick the fish up from them to take care of them.

That's sickening to hear man. Good for you for at least getting the fish away from them.

By the time the SPCA does anything about it, those fish would've found a new home via the newspaper article. Good on you shakes...

Well thats the thing, you report them and then there's a case and in general alot of hassle. Rather buy the set up, get the fish out and no worries.

I know, just feels wrong rewarding people for something like this by giving them cash. Again maybe its not rewarding them but saving the fish.
Glad you are taking them shakes.

Put my offer in and waiting for a response, but she wants way to much for the set up. But i'm putting her under pressure to make her mind up quickly.

unfortunatly this countrys legislation on animal abuse is more in favour of people than the animals, add to that an over burdened court system and the animals just slip through the cracks. the stories i could tell you folk of horse abuse would appaul you.

Whats so sad about the system that if you report people for abuse that they first given a warning and a time period to rectify the conditions before the second inspection, also depending on the circumstances of the abuse obviously. Can only sit and wait and hope she accepts my second offer. Any ways.

I would imagine they can do something.

    http://www.spca-ct.co.za/

Seems they can, yes :) Good to know.
Here's their "report abuse page" http://www.spca-ct.co.za/cruelty.asp

Heehee... I've got a funny thought going through my mind...

My wife and I are in the process of adopting 2 cat's from the SPCA. In order for us to adopt, their policy is that before they release the animal, they HAVE to sterilize the animal to prevent future puppy's or kittens... etc etc... Now if they take in fish... how do they sterilize the fishies???

Jokes aside, we were at the SPCA on Saturday looking at the cats, and it was so sad to see how many dogs had arrived within a period of 32 hours (from the beginning of the holiday on Friday, until we got there) There muct have been about 30+ dogs!!!

whats really sad is that most of those dogs will end up being put down zoom. everyone wants the cute lil puppy and nobody wants the grizzled veteran in the next cage. i cant go to spca's i end up in tears, we had a staffie of 12 which we took over from a neighbour and now have a lab cross, with a history of abuse, of 18mnths that i took over from my bf . shes my tank cleaning buddy lol, she steals my sponges and takes them off to be ripped to shreds and the pieces spread over the house lol.

oh one last thing, ADOPT FOLKS! there are places where you can get rescue pure breeds and lets be honest who doesnt like a mutt? they like getting a lucky packet you never know how they'll turn out when they grown lol and my two are my pride and joy.
right thats my propaganda for the spca lol
