Sad panda. Shrimp got stuck in HoB and died. Now what?

Running a cheapo DoPhin SH280 HoB on my little 2ft tank. It comes with one of those fairly coarse filters on the intake and also has de-oilers. I added some Seachem stuff into the HoB on the one side of those filters that slot in to have a place for bacteria. I also added some filter material/mesh and wrapped it around the course intake filter so nothing small can get stuck or sucked in.

Today I couldn't find my sole remaining shrimp ANYWHERE and found it dead in the back of the filter.

I can only imagine it got caught in the de-oiler? How else could this have happened? Any suggestions?

I run sponges on my shrimp tanks. No risk of them dying anywhere

 

After I wrote this I realized I should just cover the de-oiler / surface skimmer with the same filter mesh material. Let's see what happens then. Unhappy cos it was doing so well and recently moulted as well.

 

One could even cover the inlet of the filter with a bit of coarse sponge. This not only makes it safe for the shrimp/shrimplets, but allows a biofilm to grow on the surface of the sponge from which your shrimp can feed.

Con: the sponge may occasionally become "clogged", so you'll need to squeeze it out every so often.
