    Hi Guys

At 1:30am two nights ago my Penn Plax Cascade 300 Internal Filter (http://www.tropicalfishencounter.com/store/images/105_0551_edited-1.jpg) start making this vibrating/grinding sound which woke me up 9ank is close to my bed). I proceeded to try everything I could think of (including cleaning the impeller, readjust it etc. etc.) to try get rid of the grinding sound but to no avail!

So I head back to the LPS and demonstrate the noise its making. They RELUCTANTLY replace it (I only had it for a month and a half) with a new unit. "Great" I think but my relief was short lived due to the fact that when I installed this new unit it made just as bad a vibration as the old one????

I've decided that its just a useless product but I'm really tired of wasting money on filters that make alot of noise (I purhcased an Elite Filter http://www.theaquariumshop.com.au/images/full/Elite_Jet_Flow_Internal_Filter_100.jpg which also made a racket and its now just sitting doing nothing in my cupboard).

Can anyone suggest a good filter that is QUITE and i mean REALLY QUITE as I'm a bit of a light sleeper. Was thinking of getting one of the hang on filters http://saltwateraquariumsupplies.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/hangonfilter-02.jpg and just keep my water level high so that it doesnt trickle down.

Incendently I have a Resun 300 in my other tank which is very quite but I'm hesitant to get another one of these units as a) they are not adjustable and will blast my mollies and b) it could just be a 'lucky' unit!

Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

wat size of tank do you have ? if 200+ then get a canister for quiet running like the teratec i have is whisper quiet exept ,if it has air in it ,wich is wen you open itor let air in through the input tube and if that persists just shake the whole filter gently to release the air try this on you canisters and see if it works and if not sell them and get a garanteed brand like hagen or tetra etc but the spay bar on all canisters are loud

Why not use a decent brand like a Fluval and stay away from the cheap and nasty's from China?

    hey kiazer,

i have a HOB filter, its quiet when the water level is high enough but the problem you may experience is when there is a power cut, most of these units need to "filled up" with water before they can start filtering again, which means that you would have a filter running dry until it is filled up...thats probably the only drawback...speaking of which my HOB starting making a noise at 11:30pm last night, just as i got into bed, i took it apart, cleaned nicely, put back together and was super quiet after that...i might take it back to the store and get an internal filter..i got the RS2000 HOB...

Its a excellent filter, 3500lt/hr, very quiet, self primming and really can't complain about my one. They are expensive but worth every penny.

I also did, paid R3200.00 which included shipping plus extra filter sponge. Some LPS ask up to R4500.00 just for the filter.

Was the filter making a noise from vibration or cavitation(air trapped in the impeller)?

I've got a cascade 200 Hang on filter and it's nice and quiet, same as my cascade 1200 canister filter. The only time they make a noise is when there's air in the pumps.

Maybe try a small canister filter?

    Hey

The best canister filters that I've ever used are those made by Eheim - I've never, ever had a problem with them (been running the first for 5 years and still running perfectly, the second one for about 1.5 years, still as good as when I got it.)

    There are two problems though:
    1) I haven't seen these for sale in Durban for a long time - the last time I saw one here was 5 years ago when I bought my first one. I had to get my second one from Joburg...

    2) They cost you big time. And it's not just the initial cost either - if it happens to break, the parts will put holes in your wallet. Fortunately they don't break easily, and the spare parts are easily traceable and obtainable.

If you're worried about the Resuns, just run several smaller units at the same time. Again, another brand I can only recommend as I have had zero problems with any of their products.

I've seen Eheim canisters in the R2k range, never as much as R6k!

Yeah the first Eheim I got was R2500ish... can't remember the exact amount. The second was just under R4000, but it was a pretty big filter (rated for a 500 litre tank).

KiazerG my Cascades work very quietly. A great product

Check if the impellor cover is on correctly.
When I clean my units out I sometimes forget to put the impellor cover on, that’s the only time it makes a horrible noise

Those Cascade filters do work very well. (I had one but it burnt out when the tank burst because it doesn't like being out the water.)
