    Hi all

What is an effective way of saving electricity to heat a fish room? I stay in a city so coal (donky) is out of the question

    Regards

    Nick

The best way to save electricity is a good insulation.

    I agree.
The better the insulation, the less heat will be lost, and your costs will come down

aircon apparently is the way guys in USA go about it
but insulation is first thing i would do as well, just watch out for moisture build up i had to repaint whole room and replaster a wall

Humidity and condensation is an issue.
A small dehumidifyer would do the trick. But will cost to run.

That's one of the reasons I scrapped the plans to have a fish room.
The setup costs were just spiralling and that was before I worked out the daily running costs

In winter I use one of those reflective heat blankets to cover up the tanks when I am not at home - helps also a lot with load shedding.

I summer I switch of the heaters - warm enough inside/outside for guppies/Oscars.

Must be the hottest summer on record, all my tanks are at 30C, and here we are discussing ways of heating rooms...:)

agree top dog on insulation, depending on your budget, you can have an aircon providing climate control, i.e. heating, cooling, and humidity control

Do you actually know the exact power consumption at the moment ? If not then get a power meter and see what you are really using.

You might be spending more on expensive heating options than what you would save realistically.

The cheapest is a thick blanket over the tank - but that obscures viewing.

Over the past 3 years I have pretty much been able to limit my fishroom power to about R3500 per year - but at a cost, better canister filters, LED lights, better heaters etc ... so doing this for the money does not really make sense. Do you have something that is very wrong in your fishroom? Plate glass windows or a draft etc. If you can do the basics first then look at the expensive options.

Another option is to enclose the tanks in polystyrene sheeting.
And take the front one off when you want to watch the fish.
