    size of the tank?
    fish in the tank?
    plants in the tank?

reason why i ask this is, if you have pleco's, i'd say get wood, as this is good for them, and they stay away from your plants a bit more!

then get what you like, if you see a nice piece of wood, and you think it looks nice, take it, the same goes for the rock,

@Vez & @Franna - what type of wood can be used in freshwater aquariums?

I find rock gets old quick - as in the look and use, driftwood I like to mix and match. It seems to lend itself to more diverse scapes over many years. Rock also has the potential issue of weight - it is typically more dense, making tanks heavy when moving things around. Also if you pile rocks they tend to be more problematic when it moves and bangs against the glass. All in all, unless you are doing a specific design I'd go for wood. If you get past the leaching of the wood I believe it has less chance of causing havoc than a rock altering you tank chemistry, wood does rot so they are probably not as durable as a rock wood be.

Just remember the wood might make your tank yellow for a while. Nice thing about wood it that you can tie plants to it and wait for the plants to grab hold of the wood. Also look for wood with character, lots of little holes and hiding places for fish

If you use rocks you can always get slate (just make sure its save for your aquarium) You can build/stack them and make caves for the fish. and you can buy smaller pieces for your tank.

@HeinrichvH, go down to Peter at Fish For Africa, when I was there the other day he had a large pile of the root style driftwood, but look at Loolilocks first. Juan usually has some nice pieces...
