RIP My Favorite (Blacklisted) Plant

Hi all, I'll start off with saying I don't want fights or long debates on this friendly site, just a little clarity.

Relevant info off the governments site:

• List no.130- Elodea canadensis Michx AKA- Canadian water weed AKA- Anacharis, Catagory: 1b
• Category 1b: Invasive species which must be controlled and wherever possible, removed and destroyed. Any form or trade or planting is strictly prohibited.

So, somehow through my research of freshwater shrimp, I just found out that my favorite tank plant is prohibited in SA I regretfully plan on ridding myself of it but I wanted to know how urgently I need to do this since its category is 1b am I allowed to keep it until I find a suitable (hopefully similarly loved by my fish and myself) plant or do I need to go home rip it out and burn it on my braai at lunch time (any reason to pull out the braai and light it for a good piece of meat )?


On the flip side- does anyone have any suggestions on an approved plant that can fill this void thats just been made in my soul?

 

You 100% sure it's the same plant? Not something similar looking...

 

Pretty sure, I'm on another international forum and they previously ID it as Anacharis. Here is one of my boys showing off with a lot of it in the background.

 

Light the braai, take out a cold one and then contemplate the whole issue. A few questions? Are you selling the plant? Is it possible to get from you into the enviorment (rivers,dams etc). Is the department of nature conservation knocking at your door? If no to these questions, keep your plant.

Lagarosiphon major is a good, native version of Elodea sp. it can be a little tricky to get a hold of though!
