I stumbled onto a local product that is a direct pool filter sand replacement.
It is called Clinobrite 814. They claim that it Eliminates the "Chloramine devil" in your pool.

Many of us use pool filter sand as a substrate .... what would happen if we used this stuff? Do you think it means that we could use tap water straight - i.e. no RO / filter / dechlorination etc.

I currently - for JHB water - do all my water changes with a "Cheap" kitchen counter unit that has a .3 micron filter, activated carbon block and a UV light .. never had an issue with this - but not sure if this actually does anything to the chloramine.

These guys also have other zeolite products - never tried any of them ... has anybody else?

    http://www.pratley.com/zeolite.htm#

I have some perlite (from a hydroponic shop) - want to see what that does if I add it to the filtration ... don't think it will do anything to chloramine. Like batting (filter floss), it could be cheap throw away filtration.

Using Clinobrite 814 as a substrate might simplify fish keeping and make more ppl stick to the hobby with less maintenance complexities.

Now I just need to try and get some.

It sounds interesting but wouldn't it remove the chloramine over a period of time and not immediately???

    Is it worth it..

    Hey there guys!

    This reference to "chloramine devil"
is about WHEN chloramine is FORMED in swimming pools..that happens when chlorination of water contacts protein matter, or ANY Ammonia

No ways are you going to be experiencing the same extent or scenario in any domestic aquarium.

NO salt can be used in tank, AT ALL.
    It will cause automatic ion-exchange.
This process is referred to as REGENERATION.
In this case swap out of NH3 species with Na+, will occur:eek:

and we know we don't want NH3 , unexpected and unwelcome in any form..ESPECIALLY in mass release from the Clinobrite.

Pratley's trade name for mined Zeolite, by the way, most natural zeolites are Aluminosilicates.
Also calles Clinoptilolite, which shows were they got trade name from.

The correct aquarium grade IS SOLD, as "clinosorb", by same crowd

The other claims can be easily justified:

Just use it after your cheap 3-in-one kitvhen counter unit, to mop up NH3 missed!
Will slightly soften your water as well, by reaction with cationic metal ( Ca, Mg, Ba, Sr mostly) .
Porosity is useful for biological filtration, but prefilter mechanically, AND NEVER use any salt in that aquarium system!!!!!

For a related overview, have a look at post#20 onwards

    ( a chlorine joke!)

you can use seachem Safe or Prime or ChlorGuard for removing chloramine, the products are formulated to neutralize both chlorine and chloramine

    Yeah ..
I've been lucky, my routine works without having to keep adding product to fix problems. I was looking at a way to get more ppl into the hobby without complicating it with add this, do that - wait for this or that reading, thus making it easier to acquire MTS

    Hokaai!!

    back up a little there...

You are 100% Correct regarding Prime and Safe.
BOTH, CAN and WILL do more than just Dechlorinate.

    So will

    • Neutral Regulator

    • Liquid Neutral Regulator

Seachem ChlorGuard WILL NOT remove Chloramine in any form WHATSOEVER.
It will split Monochloramine (or other NHCl compouinds) into Chlorine and Ammonia, and mop up the Chlorine ONLY

THEN it needs Amguard (Liquid or Dry), or one of the ABOVE products to effectively remove Ammonia .
That equates to false economy if >1 product required for the job

ChlorGuard is a primary Dechlorinator, and does THAT job very well.:blink1:

    It's all good

    No problem.
    My pleasure.

I don't have enough online time to help out on detailed info as much as I'd like to.

    BUT when I can.......:blink1:
