Hi all my fellow fish keepers.

Bought my Purigen in the middle of December, I was wondering do I regenerate it now after being in the tank for about 3 months.

It colored quickly to red after my driftwood still leached some tannins.

Want to know form other fish keepers who use purigen, when and how did they regenerate their purigen.

And did you use the same method as below or what maybe worked better for you.

Regeneration: Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metalic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of ChlorGuard™, Prime®, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well. Original color and full activity should now be restored and Purigen® is ready for reuse. Caution: some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigen® and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odor of chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

Mine also discoloured quite quickly when I first put it into my tank. - within 3 weeks it was very dark so I had to regenerate it immediately, as they recommend, once it becomes dark and discoloured it then stops working.
I took it out and did exactly as you have posted above and what they recommend. Just use NON PERFUMED JIK to do the soaking with.
The Purigen became pure white again and I put it back in the tank - and is perfect. It does smell a bit lousy when you put it into the Jik.
Cannot remember exactly what they recommend - but I think you can regenerate it up to 5 or 6 times.
It is a fantastic product I have found !!
    cheers

Hey there, I tend to regen my purigen when it turns dark brown - depending on what is in the tank how long it takes. So anywhere between 1- 3 months.

And yes I use that method of cleaning it. I found the older the purigen the long it takes to clean it. I found I had to use more prime to get rid of the bleach afterwards. Also use normal unscented bleach.

Do I have to use Prime or can I use my Seachem Neutral regulator it also removes chlorine and chloramine. How much prime did you use @ Wyvren and @ eros111?

How many times did you have to rinse it after the bleach method?

I got the purigen that comes in the bags, got 2 of them.

What did you use to soak it in a glass jar would probably be safe.

So I would think it is fine after the chlorine smell goes away.

Please advise I want to make sure that I do it right.

Hi there, Im not sure about that product it may work tho.

I rinced mine for 20mins then hung it on the washing line to dry in the sun before soaking it in the prime. I soak it in for 2 days, with fresh prime water every day. I just tend to be over careful. Seachem Safe also works very well.

That is a very good idea, I will follow your method to the last point then:wink: I also rather be safe then sorry. Did you also only add 2 table spoons of prime each time?

Will get a small bottle of prime might even ask my work colleague to give me some:idea:

    Thanks for all the info.

Also used the Prime in a stainless steel bowl.
Rinsing it with cold water - it took LITRES of cold tap water is all I can tell you - bit of a waste actually - but I guess one has to do it!!!
Even then, after all those rinses it still smelt a bit of the Jik.
I double dosed it with the prime, did that twice over 2 days, then spread it out on a baking tray put it into the sun, and let it dry completely for like 4 days before I put it back into my tank.

Was just wondering - would swimming pool chlorine not be easier instead of Jik ( chlorine is also a bleach is it not?) - maybe someone will be able to tell us.
Chlorine is also much stronger than Jik and might do a better and quicker job ????

I think there is a chemical difference between Jik (bleach) chlorine. Jik-bleach is sodium hypochlorite which has >10% chlorine- this may vary depending on manufacturer. Pool chlorine can be calcium hypochlorite or cyanuric chloride. The concentration may differ between bleach and pool chlorine.

Whatever you do - never let the purigen dry out completely ... bad things happen (ok you just shorten the products life).
