Hi I'm looking for a cheap substrate for a 3ft tank , I recently had to do repairs in my house and lots of painting (by accident drop paint in gravel) so now I have to redo the tank and unfortunately don't have a lot of extra cash for it, but it also need to be for a plants which are

    chinodorus
And a carpet plant I just got be for everything went off track

As for the fish there in a bucket until they can go back to there tank once everything is done.

I think a fairly common cheap substrate would be pool filter sand.
I'm pretty sure vallis can grow in it, I'm not sure about the others, but I reckon if you stick a few root tabs in it should work.

Yes with pool filter sand (rinsed very well) and root tabs the Val and swords will grow. Probably not the carpeting plant, depending on what it is.

You can always put a layer of potting soil under the pfs, it does make the water a bit yellow for quite a while though
