Like the title states. How common are X-ray tetras? Does anyone own them?

I haven't seen these fish in any of my local pet stores or friends aquariums.

How much would someone expect to pay for this fish?

Are there any other fish that have slowly disappeared from store tanks?

    Regards

    TM

There are plenty of them here in Cape Town! See them all the time? Hardly a rare fish?

There prices are usually anything from R5 - R12 depending?

They also are more commonly known as Pristella tetras, so that may be why you are struggling to spot them?

    Cheers
    G!

No, I own a breeding trio of them. Just wanted to know if it's worth me keeping them or selling them off.

Here in Durban, I haven't seen it anywhere else but in my tank.

I am trying to hunt down Wrestling Half beaks too.

    Regards

    TM

If x-ray tetras and pristella tetras are the same thing... then they are definately NOT rare! I often see them in our LPS. I have a school of about 20 of them.

Well since they are so abundant I just might hold on to them because both my females have black masses in them that I think are eggs. Might try and spawn them.

This thread is also for other fish that are supposedly hard to get.

Are Gold Marble Plecos still on the market?

The picture you've posted as a 'Ghost x-ray tetra' looks like a colour variant of Pristella maxillaris. Northlands had a batch of those not so long ago - came in with Pristellas if I'm not mistaken. They aren't as common as Pristellas, but are by no means rare.

Wrestling halfbeaks are hard to find... I saw a pair 4 years ago. Never seen them since.

I see halfbeaks quite often, not sure if they are the same as the ones you mention.

There are two 'common' types of halfbeak in the trade in SA (that I know of anyway) - the Celebes halfbeak (Nomorhamphus liemi), which tend to pop up a lot, and the wrestling halfbeak (Dermogenys pusillis), which is the one that we're having trouble finding...

Golden Pristella is different to X-ray tetra, but I'm not sure if its just a colour morph or a different species?

Pristella and X-rays are the same fish... If they are not, then this is another case where common names account for nothing, and scientific names should be considered.

Take a look here.... http://www.fishlore.com/profiles_pristella_tetra.htm This suggests that the Golden is just another colour morph.

What Salmon says about the Ghost X-ray being a colour morph is also true.
