    Hello

Looking for the ID of the rainbows here

there is a Boesmanni and a dwarf neon in the pic as well, not to worry about these.

Just need to verify, are the other 3 banded rainbows?

They are sold in the hobby as Melanaotaenia trifasciata AS the Banded, Jewel, Goyder River or even Regal Rainbowfish.
There are more than a dozen forms of this fish currently in collector's circles, according to my fish sources.

Hybridisation is not too difficult within and outside the group, so that does leave some room for doubt... as to EXACT form.

BUT, all that being said, you would not be wrong calling them 'Banded Rainbows'

    Hey Gilbert!

I agree with Altum on this! Trifasciata they are indeed, otherwise known as Three Banded amongst other names, but as mentioned it is likely that they are Hybridised (is that even a word? Sounds wrong? Dyslexia Kicking in!)

Take a look at the Profs Albums, theres a beauty in one of his pics!

Is that Boesmani one you got from me? Looking rather yellow in that pic!!

    Cheers
    G!

    Hi Gilbert,

We need better pictures of these to be able to identify them correctly. Although I have looked extensively for three banded rainbows in SA, I have never seen any. Only hybrids are sold in SA as these are what are exported from Malaysia and Singapore. I have seen many of the varieties of three banded rainbows at a breeder in Belgium a number of years ago from where I got my Goyder Rivers, but none of these look like anything that I have seen here, and from your pics I would not say that they are trifasciatas I am sorry to have to say.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Gilbert,

I am not sure about these fishes, that is all I can say.

I would like you to visit the website of Adrian Tappin, an Australian who is an authority of Australian and New Guinea Rainbows http://members.optusnet.com.au/chelmon/index.htm Have a look at the species listing, but there you would only see one image of the trifasciata rainbow. What I would advise though is that you download the rainbowfish book by Adrian and in this there are all of the different variants of trifasciatas are shown as images. I cannot associate your fishes with any of these images. I would actually advise that you send Adrian your image and ask him what he thinks your fishes may be. If you get an answer, and he is really helpful, then it would be nice if you could post his reply please.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
