    Hi All,

I've just registered here today. Hoping to become an active member of the community. I am currently in the process of making up my mind about what setup I want for my new home so advice or suggestions are welcome. I have kept fish before so I am not a complete newbie, but I would appreciate suggestions too.

I'm looking at starting with about a 150l tank with tropical fish. I would love vertical styled tank as opposed to the regular rectangle shape but I've been advised that this might not be the best idea. So thoughts on that too would be great.

I love loaches and corys, and I want at least 1 pleco. Then I've always thought swords were very striking, and some angels are great! I don't want guppies, platies or mollies. I want to go for the unusual looking fish, or the strikingly pretty ones.

    Please advise...

Hi RaD and welcome to TASA :)

Yip, a vertical styled tank looks good but it has less of a surface area which is what you need for gaseous exchange.

Loaches and corys are also some of my favourite fish, along with Angels as everyone knows :) I'm sure everyone will have loads of ideas though.

    Where are you based?

    Thank guys.

I didn't even think about the surface area of the water. Would that make a difference though if you had enough aeration in the tank?

I'm originally from PMB, but I've been in JHB for 2 years now.

If your aeration is good you should be okay - just remember power failures ...

    Thanks zafgak and 2time.

I don't think I've had a power failure in almost a year now. What ever happened to Eskom and their load shedding? As a matter of interest though, how long could tropical fish in general survive without proper aeration? And how much longer would this period be extended if the surface area is increased?

I was reading up about plecos and apparently they get quite big (60cm I read). Would I not be able to keep 1 or 2 in a 150l tank? Would they outgrow it or would their growth be "stunted"?

    Welcome man,

I would suggest you keep fish from one geographical area as they will all have the same ph, temp etc.

ie Amazone, South East Asia etc.

Tank is a bit expensive for second hand - especially as there are no filters lights etc.etc.
I would look for a better bargain.

Plus the tank is a little high so your oxygen exchange is not going to be great..

    I Dunno - Maybe ???

Oki cool. thats what I thought. It's just that the stand is nice. But I'll look for something cheaper.

It does look better :) Remember that if you are buying a second-hand tank you should always disinfect everything well before using it, especially if you buy it whilst it is still in use - you don't want any diseases etc.
