...Roughly 48 hours...and it helps to aerate it...this gives time for Chlorine to gas off (Chloramine is another story though - use a good dechlor like abovementioned Prime for this) and for the various carbonates water treatment plants add to tapwater to break down and give you a more true and stable pH of your water... Throw an airstone in your bucket/vessel... moving water degasses better/quicker than plain standing water..

    I agree.
use a good dechlor product and use water straight from the tap.
but do small water changes rather than 1 big one as the changes in parameters will be less severe.

Having a lot of containers now I do use the hose pipe directly - but it only drips and I do use a very long piece of tubing also. I did have an accident a few days back- too much chlorinated water going in too quickly! About ten males of the 55 males in the tank died - the others are okay. I did de-chlorinate as soon as I saw what happened and I did put in some extra bubbles. Interesting enough, all the males that died were of the same coloring and size.

I have a large water drum (100L or 25% of my tanks volume). I add Seachem prime as per instructions and then let a medium airpump with a bubbler run to aerate it.

That's my persona setup, i do water changes once a week so it ages for around 6-7 days (white stuff that i assume is chloramine/chlorine is always leaking from the top of the drum)

Chlorine will be removed after 24h just by letting the water stand. Chloramine will not. You need to use something to get rid of that too, like Seachem Safe or Prime. If you do use Safe or Prime then one hour should be more than enough. (I usually do water changes directly from tap with Safe or Prime unless I am medicating).

If you are using medication like copper in the tank then you need allow time for the [fresh or aged] treated water to become safe to use with the copper medication. This can take 24 to 48 hours after treating with a conditioner. If you don't do this and add treated water to the tank too soon, then the conditioner still available in the water will reduce the safer copper treatment Cu2+ to Cu+ ... which is 10 times more toxic and you could kill the fish.

I do approximately 50% water change a week. Hose straight into the tank and I dose with PRIME. Granted I fill it very slowly but I have never lost a single fish..

Bear in mind that the parameters of your tap water are the ultimate factor here. We are fortunate round here in the sense that the water is not very harsh in terms of PH and chlorine etc.. Maybe get your water tested and then decide how careful you need to be.

Tap water parameters can also change suddenly however so I guess safer rather sorry is best but my personal exp is that PRIME does the job.

I do it the same way, but in smaller quantities. 10-15% weekly.

I've got a cooler box running with a heater and pump for circulation the day before a change. I hit with it with Seachem prime and then when I put it in temp is right as well. Makes changes way quicker.

How do you get it into the tank though? Return pump? Buckets?
