Questions regarding PFP with regards to PRACTICAL APPLICATION

The pfp seems to be working from the plant growth i have noticed.
Can anyone who has a pfp setup please post how long it took before their water became clear,
this wait is agonizing and i need to reintroduce my fish.

I believe this answer has been covered, not specifically, but in the general discussion of the PFP thread in the Professor's Forum.

But to give you a brief answer, it could take a few days, it could take a few weeks. It all depends on what type of water movement you have, and how much you capped the PFP, as well as what TYPE of substrate you used to cap.

I personally do not feel it dangerous to put fish into this tank already, as the peat staining is softening the water, and is actually beneficial. Some people even put peat into their filter for this exact reason.

If you want to remove the discolouration faster, you can also use a bit of activated charcoal in the filter.

 

okay thanks for the response. I did a 60-70% water change and it seems to have worked, prior to that i have been carrying out 50% changes every 3-4days. Its been 2 days now and the water is clear, hope it stays that way. This tank was setup roughly about 2 weeks ago with cycled water

Although something i have noticed is a thin film like substance on the surface of the water with some tiny bubbles , could this be as a result of the pfp? or is it just dust?

 

Just to confirm that what has been said about reducing the brown colour when using PFP is perfectly correct.

Speedz, this film that you are seeing on your tanks surface is what one calls a biofilm and is caused by non-harmful bacteria. If you put an airstone into the tank somewhere it will go away in no time. It is not the result of the pfp and can occur in any aquarium. However, do not worry about it as it is not harmful to the plants or the fishes.
