    hello,

Is PVC Weld or any other pvc glue safe for aquarium fish. Im setting up a tank and it needs new overflow pipes, what do I use to connect pipes and fittings so that they dont leak?

    Thanks,
    Mitch

i think its safe. Just let it dry well and wash before using it.

Many local plumbers use PVC Weld for drinking water pipes and other plumbing its approved for drinking water conditions so it would be safe for use on your fish tank plumbing. But its important to let it cure for at least 48 hours, dont start it up before then.

Also once its glued you wont ever get the un-glued meaning if you make a mistake and it sets you might as well start over.

I used Tangit PVC weld for my pipe works to my sump.

After waiting a couple of hours for it to dry completely i fulled the tank up and let it run for well over a day.

This was during cycling time and after introducing fish there was no problems.

IMO use Tangit. It is better then most PVC welds and can withstand ponds and aquariums high water pressures better than other products.

Agree with Khalid. Tangit is a bit more expensive, but it is actually designed for high pressure.

also have a look at pvc cement (white bottle with redish sticker) thats the only pvc glue i use and recommend. Also before you glue anything together clean the pipes with a very fine grain wet sand paper (makes the pipes look like new), also ensure that the fitting is clean and dust free, apply glue generously to the end of the pipe and inside of fitting and twist 45 degrees as you insert pipe into fitting, remove excess glue with your finger leaving a neat finish. Let it cure for 24hrs.

Don't want to be an absolute pain here: Tangit can be glued and will not come apart after 30 seconds. My pool company repair pool leaks using Tangit, and after 5 minutes turn the pump back on. Are you possibly letting it cure to get rid of the smell, and possibility of leeching? or to just ensure a good seal?

Yes, most of the smell will go away after 24 hours, i still run the tank for a couple of hours (also time to check for any leaks), then drain it completely and then start with the substrate and refill. Probably not 100% necessary but i like to be on the safe side with this kind of thing.

I've used both and both work just as well. I go nuts between the two joins, making sure there is excess glue pushed out. Then use that excess to seal up the lip of the elbow/union
