the bigger the tank the longer it will keep a stable temp.

    smaller tanks get cold faster

Im in Strand we have power :)

Apparently 1 hour is enough time for the bacteria to die in a biological filter but i dont know for sure

I have many power failures so I keep a back up corner filter running in the tank so I still have a filter as the sump won't run without power but I have an airline in the sump and keep the filter and sumps bacteria going with a batterypowered pump they're cheap abt R80 last about 8 - 10 hours on 2 dcells just get the recharbable aa to dcell converter that's a lot cheaper and wrap the tank in a blanket

Just to add to Snyper... what he is doing is keeping the water moving over the biological filtration. This movement of water ensure that oxygen is getting to the bacteria, and will prevent them from dying off. Yes... the bacteria do start dying off after an hour.

Another thing you could do is float your filter medium in the top of your water... but understand that this will more than likely also mess the water. But I've heard someone (I think it was Zafgak) say to do this in extreme cases.
