Hey, I am really interested to see the variety of bettas available today. More specifically YOUR bettas.

Here's my oldest guy. Hes a veil tailed betta who is almost 2 years old.

I have 2 crown tail males which I still have to photograph but I will post here as soon as I do.

I am really excited to see your bettas! There's so many color morphs and patterns these days. It will be interesting to see similar looking bettas owned by a few different people.

    Regards

    TM

    He was beautiful!

I assume you replaced him with a equally beautiful one?

 My grey/steel blue crown tail was just found dead in my community tank.

I kind of expected it because I bought him and noticed him bloaty. He recovered from the bloat but I just noticed today that his fins where thinning out. :(

Found him dead just now with the pleco sucking on his dead body.

Really sad as he was the most beautiful betta I've owned.

But I guess there will always be more.

They are actually quite hardy fish. Just that this one was already infected when I bought it.

Ideally you want a betta that's active in the LPS tank. He must fend of other fish (if he is in a community tank) and come up to the tank when you are near it.

The betta in the fist post nearly got killed by my malawis, but pulled through. Its not the first time he nearly die. He is a sterling example of a healthy fish. He accepts food from my hand!!

kwl! just would like to know
1 where can i obtain healthy bettas?
2 would like a sponge filter will that work?
3 must i have an aeraroator running?
4 i heard you dont need a heater, REALLY?
5 would a fish be okay with 8 liters?

    1. If you update your location then someone in the area can tell you where to go. If you live in Pretoria you can go to Animal Kingdom or Pet n Pond.
    2. Yes, a sponge filter will work if you have a nano tank
    3. Just the bubbles from the filter are fine, and there must be suffficient space above the water surface for the betta to breathe as they are OBLIGATORY air breathers
    4. You REALLY REALLY do need a heater. Bettas without heaters are very lethargic and just lie in the water, esp. in winter (i.e. they are not happy). In summer you MAY be able to get away without a heater if you live in a warm area (best temps are 25-26 degrees, they are tropical fish after all). They also don't live long without a heater.
    5. 8 liters/2gal should be fine, but then you need to be strict with water changes.

    Hope this helps...
    Kelly

One more tip. Always try to have a lid for your tank as they do breath air from the top of the tank it is not that healthy for them to breath cold air.
The lid makes the air between the water and the lid more humid and better for your betta.

A tip: research on the internet before you buy there are lots of nice info and all the different tail types and colour forms is just amazing. I have kept bettas for 2 years now and its still interesting to read about genetics and other stuff on the net.
