Possible 3rd Tank

So someone offered me a free 60l tank today, which I collected. It has a crack on the bottom though, so tomorrow I'll silicone it and leave it overnight to set. I will then perform water holding tests during the week.

If the tank holds, then I'll proceed to set it up. I bought a 15l bag of river sand from Builders Warehouse for only R 40. I still have some dragon rock left from the previous scape, as well as black lava rock. I've got two options in mind:


1. Island style with river sand & ADA substrate supplement that I still have left from the previous bag, decorated with the bright white decorative sand. Island will be anchored with the black lava rock.

2. Island style above, but with dragon rock and river sand throughout.

3. Mudskipper tank for my wife.


The first option kinda peaks my interest, but I don't mind the look of the 2nd option too....would be nice to see a river sand bottom again.

No clue for livestock yet.

Option 3. The less weight on the repaired glass would give you sort of peace of mind. And well, happy wife = happy life

Ok, a mudskipper tank it is then, lol.

I'll want to make it quite leafy, so I'll have to brush up on paladarium knowledge in general.

Silicone applied nice & thick. Will let it stand till tomorrow evening and then fill to test. Will definitely be applying multiple water holding tests before I go ahead with the setup.

I still have to get Styrofoam for the bottom as the tank came without it....luckily I had an old piece laying around.

Was thinking of holding some nice nano fish in the filled half of the tank. Will also look into a periodic mist sprayer for the surface, just to keep the sand & plants somewhat moist.

Btw, are mudskippers still easy to find at the shops? When I last was in the hobby, it was, but I haven't seen one upon returning to the hobby. I don't want to setup this tank, and then only to find out that I can't get a mudskipper.

PS - I told the wife earlier it'll be another mudskipper tank. She was over the moon and already started rattling off of where the tank must stand and what it's name is going to be. Something tells me that she's going to be heavily involved in the scaping process....

I've seen them last week at a local petshop.. But they are def not as common as they used to be or at least that's the case in WC..

Is that marine silicone you used or normal silicone?
Just asking because it looks white in the pictures, making me think it might be the normal bathroom kind.
We tried repairing a tank with it and it started leaking a few days later. Went over it all with marine silicone and it held perfectly.

 

I used Marine Silicone. I have trust issues with normal silicone when it comes to fish tanks.

Thanks; I will definitely be ringing up some old contacts to hear if they can get some. With this tank only being a 60cm, I'm only going to only put one in the tank; don't want fights breaking out due to the lack of space. Due to the aforementioned, I would like to get an African Mudskipper, but will take an Dwarf Indian one too if that's all I can get.

 

I have the african mudskipper, they get pretty big my previous one, who died of old age was about 160mm long if I remember correctly and yes in a 60lt tank only one, obviously it needs some land areas and make sure the filtration is good as they are pretty messy. At the moment I have 4 in a 300lt setup, still young but they are awesome, two of them are always begging for food and the other two only come out when the food is there, they are very good at hiding... I just went to my LFS owner and asked him to phone around and after a few weeks he was able to get them for me, I was looking for the indian skippers as they are a lot smaller but Im loving these guys... will be starting a thread on the new setup soon. They are pretty much all brackish, but as with all brackish fish highly adaptable... brackish is really easy to do and there are loads of plants that do well in low end brackish water. I even have some Jungle val in there.

If I were you I would silicone a piece of glass over the top of that crack, doesnt have to be the entire base but cover the crack, just my 2c been there done that got the T-shirt

I used to own a big'ish mudskipper back in the day and he was a bit shy; it hid all the time I was close to the tank. I read up on the plant types and that shouldn't be too much of a problem. I just need to get a nice filter in place. Was thinking of doing either HOB or pump with a waterfall. Or maybe even via a spray bar...really not sure what I want really to be completely honest. I've been scouting around YouTube to see some design options and then I'll put mine down on paper once I've made my mind up.

I had a chat with Nick at Hartland Aquatics and he also said to me that he can get them for me fairly easily once I'm ready. At least that component isn't a problem. Was thinking of adding some bumblebee gobies to the tank too...last time I saw gobies in the market was well over 10 years ago.

 

So I commenced the water test now only...was a bit occupied with other things. Had to go make space somewhere in my untidy garage for this. Will leave this for a few days and see what happens.
