Port Elizabeth Aquarium and Aquascaping Club

Hi all Port Elizabeth Aquarium Hobbyists
We are starting the Port Elizabeth Aquarium and Aquascaping Club (PEAAC) and will have our first meeting on Tuesday, 7 August 2018, at 19:00 at the EP Powerboat Clubhouse at the North End Lake.
The main purpose of this first meeting is to discuss the format of the club, as well as the election of a temporary committee to get the ball rolling.
All interested parties can pm me or just show up at the meeting.

We used to have a club like this - PE aquatic society. Started with about 10 members and really grew well. We ended up with a few challenges 1) we grew too large to meet at anyone's house 2) Some people wanted formalized meetings while others wanted more social meetings 3) it started becoming a chore to find venues/topics to discuss and eventually everyone lost interest.

I am not trying to discourage anyone - I think its great. I would like to attend but unfortunately the 7th is in my 14:00 - 22:00 shift at work. I will try catch the next one.

 

This is very good news for the eastern cape aquarium community and I hope we can take this opportunity to grow and not have issues.

How was the meeting? Was it well attended?

 

For a "first" meeting, it was very well attended. If the weather was not so miserable on the night, it would have seen even more interest. This meeting was basically to get things started and find out if there was enough interest out there to warrant a Club. Actually, all went very well and our first "real" meeting will be on 12 Sept @ 19:00, also at the Powerboat Club.

How active is the wattsapp group? Previous groups I have belonged to ended up chatting about anything and everything except for fish and I was getting a few hundred messages a day. I am not interested in getting into that again.

I will pencil 12 September into my schedule.

 

The group is actually quite active. I know what you are talking about and fully agree. I've been on groups like that before. Our discussion content at the moment is at least 95% aquarium related. Let's hope we can keep it that way

 

A very late follow-up on this...
The Eastern Cape Aquarium and Aquascaping Club is 6 years old this year and very active.
We hosted a very successful Expo this year and already are in the planning phase for next year's Expo, which I'm sure will be even bigger and better.
The Club's identity has grown tremendously since our humble beginnings and we are really looking forward to what the future holds.

Just letting everyone know that the expo is upon us again. Hosted at the Italian Club, 17 Harold Road, Charlo, Port Elizabeth.

30 May 2025: 10:00 - 21:00
31 May 2025: 09:00 - 19:00
01 June 2025: 09:00 - 16:00

It's going to be bigger and better than last year. I'm flipping pancakes on Saturday (09:00 - 19:00) and then again Sunday (14:00 - 16:00).

Just want to give an update on this.

The club had over 1000 people come through the expo (I don't recall numbers off hand but there were over 150 on Friday, Saturday had over 750, I haven't seen Sundays numbers yet). I can tell everyone that we sold just shy of 800 pancakes (and that I pulled off a rather impressive behind the back pancake flip). We had exhibitors from Cape Town and Joburg, and we had a speaker from Durban working at Ushaka who gave multiple talks or various facets of the hobby. Want to give a big thank you to those guys/gals/teams as well as to everyone who supported.

We will meet as a club and dissect the Expo, see what went well and what can be improved upon for next year.
