I am helping out a friend. Not to clued up on ponds but we bought a property and it had a pond with koi in it. There are plenty babies and the water is full of algea. I got my friend to buy a yt 45000 boyu pond biological filter today. Is there anything else I can do to clear the water and algea to see what's at the bottom of the pond and how many fish there are as well as being able to see the beautiful koi. Please help with some advice. We also payed R6500 for the filter so we abit tight for money to buy any other things for the pond. Any diy remedies? Awesome pond. Just to start of I have read that people use barley straw in their ponds to controle algae.

Uv is your best bet as the algea is in the water column so as soon as it runs past the uv it will sort it out yoi will have to clean the filter more while the algea is dying off so add some batting for quick removal . what size uv and the slower the water passes the better so more contact time with the algea.

Just slow down the flow for a few days but did you mean 4500 or 45000? Or just the model?

Do a big water change and scrub as much of the algae on the side of the pond, this speed it up.

I see its rated for 15000 to 25000l pond depending on stocking and has an 36w uv so not bad at all but still add extra filter wool or batting to the inlet

I got an UV Steriliser when my 4ft tank was having algae issues, and the Steriliser cleared up the tank within 24 hours.
The pond may be larger, so clarifying times will accordingly be longer, but should be effective.
As mentioned, just remember to clean the filter more regularly until the pond has cleared of excess algae.

I have used barley straw in my mini-pond this summer.
It seems to control algae in the water column quite nicely. But not string algae attached to plants, or the sides of the pond.
