I recently looked for filter pads that makes a difference .

I came across this product , poly filter. The price and size immediately put me off needless to say I took the plunge . I have a 2 meter by 800 mm by 500 mm.Community fish and planted tank

Currently running Dophin 1600 ,2400 and cascade 1500 for filtration .
The big filter used for bio filtration 6 liter matrix and corse filter media
The 1600 used for mechanical filtration mainly. Using oddesea cut to size filter pads etc
Cascade mainly for chemical filtration seachem purigen carbon and the odd filter pad.

Two internal filters on each side to further assist in flow ,skim surface and power head. Filterfloss used in these filters for polishing.

My water parameters are fine and do bi weekly water change 30%.

    The pro. Of the product.

    - It really does work wonders on clarity. I looks like the fish are floating in midair.
    - small
    - changes color depending what it takes out of the water.

    The cons

    - at R230 a pop
    - cannot regenerate
    - don't know how much you need
    - don't know when depleted if in canister filter. Visualization needed.

    Conclusion

The jury still out if this product will become part of my 3 monthly big clean.
But if you are looking for something that states it does X it really delivers on X

    Definitely!

But it works. Due to the size of my tank did not think this one "little " pad will make a difference in 24 hours .

In the past, I have used the stuffing from a pillow in my external canniste filter.
Cheap and easy to get hold of.

    It worked very well.
The only problem was that it got clogged very quickly and I ended up having to clean the filter much more often, which I got tired of, so stopped using the pillow stuffing.

Maybe worth doing in a small internal though?

I use polyester floss. Real cheap, especially at construction shops. I rinse weekly and replace once a month, it also really helps for clarity

I bought 2m of filter floss from a material shop - R20 a metre - for my canister filter. I just cut to template and paste when the filters need replacing. You may be able to rinse twice to reuse before discarding them.

It is called batting. I use it in my simp and hob without any problems at all except the extra money in my pocket.

Just make sure you can trust the source, some shops put down poison to stop critters making nests or eating the material. Getting batting form those source are clearly not ideal.

Yeah, what @Pierré Schoonraad said. Go to a material shop and see how much it costs per metre. Far much cheaper for the pocket than buying expensive name brand stuff. I mean I was looking at the LFS when I bought my airpump, airstones and a check valve - the batting for the Tetratec canister filter came up to R75 for just two. I said forget it, I'll make my own - just R20 a metre and I still have a lot of batting left.

I didn't ask as I wasn't sure if filter floss was the right name. I walked around the material shop and saw what I was looking for. Chose the thicker one over the thinner one @Lysine. It polishes my water in less than an hour so I'm actually impressed with what I got - if it's extremely dirty, you may need to add an extra layer and change it once a week. I put double the layer (2 sheets) in both my hailea pump DIY filter and in my canister filter.

@Rainstorm - 2meters of filter floss ?? Floss usually comes in bags and looks like fine wool - do you not mean you bought filter matting ( or batting as the fabric shops sell it) it's a thinnish tightly woven material, in flat sheets, that you can't pull apart like the floss ?? Personally I find FLOSS to be far better than matting to remove the tiniest pieces of debris. Yes I know the floss is a pain to clean, but it sure is effective.

@eros111 batting is in principal the same thing as filter floss. Strands of poliester fillament. But for R20 you get 1m x 1.5m x 5cm. I use about 0.25m at a time in my sump and replace it roughly evry second month. Water is crystal clear
