Hi everyone. I hope you will be able to help me. I have this white fuzzy stuff growing on the plants and sponge filters of my one tank. It is slimy to the touch and has a bad smell when it is brought up out of the water.

What is it and how can I treat it?

    I have attached images below.

Thanks in advance for your assistance. _20180401_135701.JPG_20180401_135624.JPG

Could be fungal or bacterial growth, try and siphon it off during a WC and clean your sponge off

I have done that, but it just grows back during the week. Quite tough to get rid of.

    You're testing my abilities!

I would say that it has a kind of rotting earthy smell... Almost a mouldy compost like smell...

Was this tank cycled? Any new addition lately? Looks like something I saw on my own tank when I just started my first planted setup and it wasn't Cycled. The wood I also had in my tank gave out this white funus like slime that sticked to some of my plants at first.

Have you perhaps done a hydrogen peroxide dip on this plant? read a few interesting things about it, maybe not try it until you sure what this might be.

Could try to ask the people of APSA as well, maybe one of them might have an answer for this.

Aaah the white fluff. I shows it's head when feeding hard in discus grow out tanks as well. Two bad things about this stuff is that it gives your fish eggs fungus and makes your nitrates climb like crazy. Wipe your glass and wash out those sponges really well or replace if you can't get the smell out. You can wipe down the plants and driftwood too. And yes it does smell like road kill haha. Peroxide won't help, it will come back. Look at your feeding and maintenance schedule, more feedings = more maintenance. Also check if your driftwood isn't rotting, that will also give this stuff nutrients.
