    My platy got a bit of fin rot on it's dorsel fin so I treated it with Waterlife protzan but now it's swimming with it's body vertically (face up)for about 4 days and now one of my gouramis are doing the same thing.

    Please help!!!!

    Temperature 28
    Ph = 8.5
    kh = don't know
    Amonia= 0
    Nitrite= 0
    Nitrate = 40-50ppm

    I do a 30% water change every 7 days & midweek a 10% water change.

    Sorry to hear about your fish FF - why did you use Protozin??? Waterlife MYXAZIN is used for fin rot???? Were there any other symptoms???

    You should ideally keep your nitrate levels below 20ppm. So I would suggest doing an immediate 50% water change and syphon the substrate well.

    Oops!!! Is that advised? I'm only using the gravel vacuum cleaner on the top..
    What happens to plants etc. when you have to do that??

    nitrates seem a little to high need to address that first. the face up thing sounds like a swim bladder problem but i could be wrong. if i was you id definatly try lowering the nitrates asap need to be below 30ppm atleast

    agreed butcher as then you could see if its potentially a swim bladder prob. If this is the case i have found Bio elites heal all to work quiet well and the Vitizin by water life but the price difference is scary.

    Fish if you fear it is Swim bladder read the following link i found it very helpful in working my through the problem again only if you feel swim bladder is the one.

    I did a 50% water change and vacummed the gravel but the platy is still swimming with her face up so I'm going to get the heal all and the Vitizin i jus hopeit works, i hate seeing her like that. The only really bad news is I lost my Gourami found her lying in between the palnts. Cried my eyes out.

    If you have a filter on your tap use that to top up your tank and to do water changes.

    I found that in Oz the water is very alkaline, and using filter water may take longer to fill up the bucket but it removes all of the heavey metals,ammonia,nitrates,nitrites and other nasties.
    But i would still add de-chlorinator.

    sorry for your loss

    I do have a water filter but it's on my fridge and to replace the filter it is about R400-00 rand once a month. That's steep!!! I should seriously think about getting a water filter for my tap they're a little cheaper, thanks flossie for reminding me.
