    Hi, I want to use clear plastic carpet runners to cover the top of my Discus tank for evaporation during winter. Any idea if it is fish safe?

    What do you mean by carpet runners? As in the non-slip under liner things? Or solid plastic mats?

    The non slip ones. I have frames I built to keep jumpers in from my reef days. I can fix it to the frames.

    I don't think it would be an issue as long as it isn't in direct contact with the water, and there is still gas exchange taking place. As far as I am aware none of those are coated with anything (never seen one leach at all, and do industrial carpet cleaning for a living haha)

    I would suggest making a few small holes over the surface to allow for gas to pass though for the nitrogen cycle and for oxygenation to take place properly

    Thanks, it will not be a tight fit, I have some driftwood on top at the back for looks so there will be enough space for gas exchange.

    @Nico Hamman

    Not sure if those are safe or not
    We using the sea through chromadek sheets over tank and sumps with no problem
    They also firmer and no risk of slipping into the water

    Corrugated plastic is ideal for jobs like this and is not too expensive either.

    Thanks Maria. I built aluminium frames with plastic netting when the tank was still a reef tank to keep the jumpers in. I fixed the plastic carpet runner to the frame so it will not slip.

    So far so good.
