    Hello

My balas eat anything green that appears in my tank

The only two plants that are safe in there are the Amazon Swords and the Anubia.

Does anyone know of any other tall growing plants that grow slightly faster than glacial speed, that will survive in a rough Community tank?

I don't think you are going to find anything that lot won't eat. Got rid of mine for the same reason.

Java fern is said to be unpalatable most vegetarian fish, although it is also said to be poisonous to some fish as well - do some reading up, I remember that this was true for Scats.

Bala sharks and tinfoil barbs should not be kept in a planted tank. Nothing is really safe. They will eventually destroy it all. This question comes up quite frequently. Perhaps we should create a sticky thread with a list of fish that cannot be kept in a planted tank? I can think of:
    All pleco sp
    All ancistrus sp
    Tinfoil barbs
    Bala sharks
    Malawi cichlids

I don't think it's fair to label all plecs as a threat to plants - I know of several setups where they don't harm the plants; this is especially true for the smaller species.

Also, my Bala sharks live in a tank with some Vallis and Java moss, both of which remain uneaten, perhaps because I feed them extremely well (occasionally spoiling them :p)

Add to that list Silver Dollars. They decimate any plant in the tank

Spawning gouramis. Normally they're fine, but when spawning they will chew off soft leaves to build their bubble nests.

Ditto, but not too muck damage.

    Ditto

My tank actually has Dollars, Tinfoils, pleccies and Balas.

I never throw away my cuttings from my other tank, I just feed the fish.

I used to have 4 silver dollars and one tinfoil barb and they used to destroy all my plants, but, I have always had a bala shark and still have one and I never had any problems with the plants.
