    Hi All

I recently gave a friend some java moss for his cichlid tank thinking that it would survive but it didn't... Any advice on plant species that can with stand the onslaught? I know the Anubis species are recommended but any others?

    You could try Java ferns.

Most plants won't survive the Malawi's love of greens...

haha my agree with Ryno on this one
not much that you can plant with the Malawi's, if they don't eat it they find a way to get rid of it...
I have tried a few diferent types of plants with the Malawi tank I had and nothing servived.. I even tried the hen and kyken(not sure on spelling) plant that you find in the garden.. they did not eat as much of it but it did not work very well in my tank. and before anyone goes off about that plant I know it is not an aqua plant but a few people told me about it so I tried it...
    just my 2cents.

Tough plants will be ok - Anubias, the bigger Amazon Swords etc

Soft, fragile plants will be picked apart and destroyed.

Aslo, with plants that you do try, put some pebbles around the base, so the fish can't dig them up.

Anubias and Java Ferns for the win...Anubias (because it's almost indestructible ... and Java Fern coz they wont chow it, apparently the leaves contain some sort of toxin)

What I did with my Oscars to "protect" the plants and make sure they weren't dug up...squeeze the stem through an upside down small teracotta pot (the ones you buy at a nursery). The leaves/stems are on the outside...but the roots are inside, protected from harm.

It work amazingly well for my Oscar tank...am sure it will work for an African cichlid tank as well..

Thanks for that tip. Have been fighting with my Oscar for last 2 weeks over 2 Amazon swords I want in the tank and he feels dont belong there
Last night I tied them to a smalish stone and planted again... If its out when I get home, I will go get the pots as you say, haha.. maybe I can still win the fight!!

Thank you all! I shall attempt it ... But the plastic plants may be the way (even though I despise plastic plants ). Happy Tanking !
