    Hi everyone,

I've always wanted to get a Betta, and recently I've been working on re-doing my tall 30l tank to house one. It's at the point where I've cycled and planted it and placed in the Betta (Hugo).

He mostly chills at the bottom in and around the plants, and ventures upwards when he smells food. The driftwood provides enough shade from the light, and the depth of the tank means the currents from the filter isn't too strong.
However, since there is a whole bunch of space up at the top that is relatively unused, I was wondering if anyone could recommend which fish I should put with him. I have a huge guppy breeding tank with around 50 blue-tailed baby guppies that are ready to go, and I also have some orange danios that I am thinking of putting with him as well. So any thoughts on that would be much appreciated :)
Additionally, I want to plant it a bit more heavily, as the backdrop is looking a bit sparse right now. The only problem is that the way the tank is set up, the back of the tank doesn't get much light - so the plants chosen will have to not require much light to thrive. Would anyone have any recommendations for that as well?

    Many thanks!
And before I go, more pictures of hugo :)

    Hallo and welcome to TASA!

Nice setup and that piece of driftwood is spectacular. I’ll let others comment on potential tankmates as I don’t have any experience with bettas.

Potential solutions for planting that would fit into the scale and low light are:
    - anubias or java fern attached to the driftwood with a drop of superglue gel. Anubias prefer low light, there are many different leaf sizes to choose from.
    - I have even suction cupped a clump of java fern to glass to give height.
    - mosses eg java moss. For me fissidens moss also do well in low light.
    - susswassertang eg a susswassertang wall at the back. I have tons to give away btw Rondebosch.
    - the slender amazon swords will give height without taking up too much space horizontally
    - vallis nana
    - cryptocorynes

    Wow, thanks a new day!

I will look into mosses, I agree and think some moss on the driftwood would work fantastically. I also have been looking online and see that bettas enjoy a lot of shade (similar to their natural habitat) so some moss or plants at the top of the tank could give it a nice dappled look - and also serve to provide more shelter for the potential tank-mates.
I would love some susswassertang if you're willing to give away, it would be much appreciated!

Welcome, @Josh_talks_to_his_fish ! Crypts are a personal favourite, if they will fit in your tank.

I suspect the danios might nip his fins, and would generally be a bit too frantic for a betta. They’d probably also enjoy a bit more horizontal swim space.

Thanks a mil for the guppies! They’ve settled in nicely.
Happy planting and post updates

Out of experience I wouldn’t have guppies with him. I had a guppy with my betta and the guppy kept nipping his fins a bit. Luckily I noticed it and moved the guppy.

    Hi everyone!

So update on this tank, thanks to @A new day I got a whole bunch of plants for this aquarium. I selected a few that I thought would go well once it grows out and planted them in the tank. I also received some moss which I attached to the driftwood with some black thread.

Here are the images of the tank now (along with some pictures of happy Hugo :D):
I've also included a picture of the top section so you can see some of the moss and the floating plants.
A small question for my filter setup though, as you can see the top section has a pump that flows onto a sponge where all the bacteria grows, in that area there is also gravel and the outflow runs over some quartz. The inflow of the pump is a pipe that runs down the back of the pipe, and sections of this has some charcoal in it too. If anyone has any suggestions on how I could improve this is would be greatly appreciated :)

Additionally, I added danios to the tank as well, and have been keeping an eye on things to make sure there aren't any problems - which so far there are none. They mostly just keep to themselves. Hugo seems really happy still as well :)

Finally, due to the amount of plants I received, and the fact that I had another tank cycled and ready to go, I decided to give my guppies a new home - as their previous tank was pretty shoddy and didn't have a light.

This is what I ended up with:
Thanks again to a new day for the plants!

It's quite crowded at the moment, but hopefully I can also remake my 60cm soon (that is currently housing my boesemani rainbowfish) and put some of the guppies in there. For now though I'd love to know what you all think of the setups!
