Hi guys I am looking for some useful sources as I am completely new to fresh water . I've only had marine fish tanks and recently moved into student residence and wanted to have a go at a planted fish tank . I cannot find some informative sources on setting up a planted tank . I want to keep it as simple as possible so no co2 , I've seen a lot online but can't find a suitable way for me as I am seeing people pulling potting soil in their tanks then a substrate over ( this is very new to me ) what would you recommend for me and how must I go about it . i just want to have a few plants that don't die and look great and keep a betta. thanks

The basic is to get a good substrate. Ada is the best, Flourite also good. Potting soil is no- no for a small beginner. Too much hassle and can go pear shape quickly. Circulation, filter & lights (each is a topic on it's own).

Begin with size of the tank, then what you aim to spend on the rest will assist for further guidance :)
