So I recently planted my Betta tank and thought I would create a post to share my updates of succeses and challenges. I planted it on 26/6/21 and have taken my first update pics today. I’ll endeavour to update weekly.

    Tank Size : 3.5 Gallon
    Temp : 25 degrees
    PH: 6.3-6.8
    Substrate: Ista Premium Soil
Ferts: Seachem Root Tabs at planting & Plantcare Liquid Fert from 2nd week on.
    Lights- Akwaria 5 watt LED
    C02: none
    Hardscape: Mopani and River Stones
Plants: Ludwigia - various, Java Fern, Java Moss, Bacopa and some type of grass, Cryptocoryne Wendetii and what I think is Rotala. Also some Salvinia
Current Livestock: 1 Male Veiltail Betta, 2 Mystery Snails and 12 Cherry Shrimp

Currently self timing 6-8 hours of light. Break somewhere in the middle for a few hours.

I am quite impressed with the growth in a week.

Also seachem liquid fert you’ll be using?

    Edit: tank looks great too

Edit2: and is the tank leaning to one side or is the lid just not all the way on

I have a liquid Fert but not Seachem. Yeah, the lid is on skew because the LED came off and is balancing on the tank at the moment.

The Shrimp have been moved. The Betta started hunting them.

Hahaha, its like that with most fish tho. If it fits in their mouth its going in, even sometimes by accident on shrimp safe fish

My betta used to also hunt my shrimp, but I see now he's gotten bored of them (although I'm left with just 3). Going to get some more higher grade cherries from a friend once his breed and I'll add them to my betta tank, and pray that this time he sticks to leaving them alone

Unwanted to throw in some amanos and red cherry's in my tank but I'm afraid the boesmani rainbows will just gobble them up. I'm okay if their young all get eaten but adults must survive lol. I just like the dynamic they bring to a tank with plants

I reckon adult amanos should be fine but you might have to grow them out in another tank - when I got mine they were about the size of a cherry shrimp and hid in the filter for 6 months until they were big and brave enough for the platies :D

My friend is willing to give me fully grown ones and say that he's certain they would survive. Even RCS he's definitely going to give me adults but I'm still reluctant

Yeah. Lesson learned. Shrimp are in the 38l now with 6 Glowlight Rasbora and 2 Mystery Snails. They are like different Shrimp now. Out and about and takin over! Rasbora don’t even look at them.

I was thinking of adding some adult Amano in with my 2 Adult Platy and 4 Platy Fry and small Female Betta in the 60l but I don’t want to risk it. I feel bad enough about the 7 Cherry Shrimp the Betta got hold of.

The tank was just too small actually. Although densely planted he literally went looking for them and when they moulted and were most vulnerable he managed to kill them. He didn’t eat them. Just attacked them and left them.

So since my last update after removing the Shrimp, my Betta has relaxed a lot. No more plants being uprooted either. I trimmed the tank and replanted the Ludwigia Rubin which is apparently loving the light. Also the Crypts that I divided have all sprouted new leaves. The Java Moss took a while but has started with new growth. Small amount if Brown type Algae on the Mopani but the Flourish Excel I dosed directly onto it seems to have helped. I trimmed back the Java Fern and there is already nice new growth there. [IMG]

Thanks. I would like to order some smallish grass from Aquaplants SA for the foreground. It’s a Tissue Culture and pricey so hope it works.
