Photo Competition

    What do you guys and gals say to a small monthly photo competition?

    I was thinking we just run a general photo comp, no themes or anything, just a thread where everyone can upload their favourite pic or 3. Photo's can be of full tanks, fish, snails, plants, anything. At the end of the month Rory and I will choose a winner and the winner's photo will be displayed on the home page for the following month. Perhaps with a small 2 or 3 line description about the photo.

    Sound good? Who's keen?

    hey zebra, sounds like a fantastic idea, i did mention this to the guys and they weren't very keen on the idea, but i think it would be nice, photo's can even be pics of salt water tanks???

    I like the idea but suspect that the same few people will win??

    I'm a semi-pro photographer, and know how much a good macro lens can make a difference to close up tank shots!! Not everyone (including myself) can afford a Macro lens, yet alone a decent one!!

    But all we can do is try?? Maybe get hold of one of the sponsors and get some product as a prize??

    Agreed with JesseG & Big G

    It doesn't necessarily have to be a prize based comp either, but if sponsors are willing to jump on the bandwagon, that would be awesome.

    As nice as SW tanks are, I think we should restrict it to FW tanks, that way many more people can participate and also it keeps everything on a level playing field.

    Yes, absolutely, all photo's must be your own and of your own tank/inmates.

    I like the idea... as well as the fact that there is "not prize" except for being on the front page for the month!

    Its been talked about before. But I think no prizes . Just friendly competition.

    Big G you do take great photos! Maybe add camera specs with photo. So if the quality is not that great but the shot is a great one you may still

    Yip, I read that thread and have taken note of some members concerns.

    Hey Big G.

    "the same few people will win". There is no buddy buddy with me, I don't know any of you and I will not favour one person over another. Photo's win, not the person behind the photo.:bigsmile:

    You don't have to have R27 000.00 worth of camera's and lenses to win the competition, we are not National Geographic, we're a small friendly forum in little old SA and a cellphone pic may very well be a winner. We won't always look for an international photo award quality pic, just a normal cellphone pic of your whole tank may be enough, we're not really looking for quality of pics, but geared more towards encouraging participation from the members to show off their loved livestock.

    We will not have sponsored prizes just yet, I think it was one of the concerns a few members had so we'll keep that out of the way for now.

    I just want this to be a nice friendly straight forward competition where everybody can participate and enjoy it.

    okay, so what about those members with just one tank...what happens in that case, that member will just keep submitting pics of the same tank every month??? he/she will unlikely be a winner...just food for thought...

    Thanks for clearing that up ZP ^^, I like that this will be a friendly competition. I think it'll stop many broken hearts from happening.

    @ JesseG, interesting question. The only thing I can suggest for someone with only one tank would then be to focus on every little thing in that tank instead of the tank as a whole :) OR... one could rearrange the tank :D

    I think people with one tank. (like myself) would have to become creative with their photo skills. Maybe instead of doing a photo of the whole tank, do a close up of a fish. Remember it's not just going to be a case of take a random pic and submit it... we will all have to take the time ad effort to st and wait for the perfect picture, and submit one or 2 that we appreciate.

    I wasn't suggesting that any favouritism would have been evident, but rather that the people with the nice Macro lens would win?? But its good to see that you have considered this!!

    Jesse there is a million shots in a single tank. I can take 30 of just my heater toasting my neon ;)

    Let's face it everybody loves pics even if I don't enter - would like to see the photos.
