So I’ve become interested in trying to convert land plants into aquatic/semi-aquatic plants and from what I’ve heard- people have been super successful with certain plants.
I took a cutting from a philodendron plant that i bought a couple of minutes ago and decided to test the theory. To grow them naturally , it is suggested to put them in a glass of water, so instead, I’ve put it in my aquarium!
Will keep you posted about the adaptability of the plant. The fish seem to love the floating prop a lot already.

Hi and welcome to the Forum

Will be interesting to hear from everyone on this

Cesar and I have some devil's ivy, hen and chicks and a huge philodendron growing with the roots in the water in the side filters that's doing exceptionally well

I have also put a piece of sacred bamboo and I want to try a piece liliy

I have thought of trying this.
But the Silver Dollars will probably eat the roots.

I was also scared of this so I have the roots going into the side filters which is nice, but, I have seen numerous tanks where the roots grow into the tank
Just cant remember what variety of fish were kept in those tanks

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but some philodendron species are highly poisonous, even to dogs and cats?
I've been trying to research the same approach though. Growing land plants in my tank, I've tested some land moss and grass in a separate vase, but it does not seem viable. Please let me know any you guys find something safe worth trying.

@MariaS , have you submerged the Sacred Bamboo completely? how is it doing? Can only imagine how gorgeous that would look.

I used the philodendron scandens and it’s perfectly safe - some philodendrons store poison in their leaves (which dogs and cats often nibble on) but the roots are safe, so in a fish tank environment it’s quite safe!

Safe with the leaves on the surface or submerged as well?

Yes, some are toxic and so is Pothos however the are used Worldwide by aquarists to reduce nitrates in their tanks

I have seen tanks where the top is a canopy of pothos..

I must admit that I am also a bit scared of putting them directly in the tank so what I do is grow them in my internal filters and sump

I haven’t submerged them yet, I’ve only just started the process with these new ones. I’ve done extensive research and what I found was that if it floated on the top it was completely okay - my fish are loving the little canopy!
I’m not too sure if they are able to submerge

Im actually wrong.. its the Lucky Bamboo I have in the tank.. sorry... only the tips the stems and roots in water
The Chinese.. Asians.. make bundles of these stems and allow them to grow their roots into the tank
    Apparently another big nitrate consumer

Yes... but you can cut the stem into 3 or 4 pieces and make new plants
Cut with very sharp knife just bellow a node
