Philips Tornado Cool Daylight

Found some of these lamps at Builders today .. 8/12 Watt .. I believe these are different to the Genie but look the same as the pictures in this thread http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showpost.php?p=29992&postcount=45

Price +- R50 per light
I think the attached graph is the right one for this lamp type.

 

Is it screw-in or Bayonet Type?

 

Just had a look at my genie lamp. The genie is only pushing out 54 lm/w... so this one is obviously more powerful in that regard.

 

I have the tornado's in my light fittings, and they are a good deal brighter than the Genie, even though they are the same/similar wattage!

I was actually considering using these on a few of my Breeding tanks, but I'm trying to work out whether 3 of these bulbs including fittings and cabling will be as expensive as one T5 ballast and tubes etc? I'm not convinced I'll actually be saving that much?

Anyhow, these are certainly worth considering if they are 6500K? I've never seen the rating on them myself. Hmmm, worth exploring further!

Zoom - have not checked Genie specs .. but I now need to find downlight reflectors / housings.

 

Big G - at this stage it is not the cost that is the biggest factor but being able to control light cycles to each tank individually. So yes a T5 4ft long over your breeding rack might be cheaper - but the robot needed to insert a light block between a tank and the light rail will be a bit more costly ... depending on the your need of course.

I've been keeping an eye on some of the hydroponic systems the guys are building on rollitupdotorg - they are into different light types for stages during plant development LED + these tubes with some really interesting results. Maybe it is time to start learning from these guys and girls on how to really get high controlled growth rates?

 

Are these maybe not the updated genie's? they are the same as genie's but with 10 more Lm/w at the same price. But in any case nice find m8 will look into getting some

 

Just back .. had to do a dash to PnP for some food & stuff. Found the Philips 20 Watt Tornando. Cresta had both e27 and b22 types - R50 per light.
Specs: 6500K Cool daylight, 1250 lumen and 66 lm/W

I'm currently running 2x20w Phillips tornado screw in bulbs on my nanno.. Very cool and very bright indeed

 

I use them in my 40l nano aswell very bright and my plant growth is amazing.

 

Both the Genie and the Tornado are the same, the only difference is the design of the tube itself, one is straight and the other coiled. What you need to look for is the "cool day light" or the warm white. The cool daylight is a better spectrum.

 

Anyone found the cool daylight 20W bayonet anywhere in Cape Town? I can find the odd warm white around, but no cool daylight. Plenty of 12W around though: PNP, Builders, etc.

@shihr : Do you maybe still have the packaging with the barcode on it for the 20W? It may help me track them down.

Actually, the lm/W output of the Tornado is higher than that of a similar specced Genie.

 

Currently using the 12w tornado in a temporary nano, seems good.

Just wondering how hot your x2 Tornado 20wts get, as far as melting one of those standard cheap black plastic canopies which I would be using ? I have some of that mirror like foil stuff from another Boyu tank which I will line inside.. ?
