It will work but won't be a long term solution. Perspex tend to sag over time, as far a I know.

@pierreschoonraad is right, perspex unless its fairly thick and has some support ( depending on length) will sag in time

What type of canopy do you have in mind, or do you like?
Are you wanting something like a hood or sliders?

If the tank is not very long, perspex will hold but had to be fairly thick
I bought 6mm for my 1.5m tank a while back and it bowed so you would have to go probably 10/12mm... maybe that would be ok but i didnt try, i changed to glass after that

Perspex also gets dull and blocks the light from comming through. The heat and water makes the perspex sag even when using thick 8mm aswel.

Would go with glass lid on sliders. Easy to clean and better in long time

You are right about the perspex getting dull with time and I would go with glass

Just another thought, what I have used in the last year and has not gone dull and I have found user friendly is the Chromadec type plastic see through sheets.
They do not bend ( sag) as I have them over my 2.6 x 1m tank and Cesar has them on his 3.6 x 1.2m tanks
Wht i like about them is that they flexible and i just lift the front to feed
If they get a bit dusty or a bit of algae growing on them, take them outside wash off with the house pipe and they like new again,

Yes, same as @Barry Roux posted in his picture except I use them the other way round , as they flexible by using them the other way I just lift the front and put something holding it up while I feed

I rest them on the bracing where the glass sliders originally ran

    How's the evaporation with these?
Don't the gaps on the side cause evaporation?
