    Hi ppl.

    I just want to find out. Do you still need a permit to sell tropical fish in South Africa?.
    The reason why i ask is in the early 90`s i was fined for selling the fish that i was breeding at home. At that stage i obtained a permit to do it, and was allowed to carry on.

    Is there still such permits in place ? And if so where do you apply for them.

    I dont think so. The best bet would be to contact a petshop.

    Hi Wally.

    As far as I know you only need permits if you intend keeping and breeding black listed fish. Henk, our resident "special ops"/conservationist guy could perhaps shed more light on your question.
    If you have not already, do yourself a favour and check out the black list on this site. There are many fish on there that were common in aquariums in the early '90s.

    Cheers Vince

    No Permit needed to sell tropical fish,but you should at least have a CC registered,Vat number.
    Note that we do not speak about blacklisted fish,animals,plants,reptiles etc as these will surely get you fined.
    However if you want to import plants and fish(even if they are not blacklisted) you do need to have a permit.

    Think I read that you need permit to breed marine - but could not find one for tropical.

    And if you do have a permit to catch marine for your tank you need to keep a log book ...

    "Regulations specific to marine aquarium fishing
    (15) The holder of a recreational fishing permit endorsed for marine aquarium fish shall not catch, disturb, or land:
    (a) any fish listed in Annexure 5;
    (b) more than five fish per species;
    (c) more fish than the bag-limit listed in respect of each species in species list of Annexure 6 during any one day;
    (d) any fish smaller than, or of a mass less than, the size-limit listed in respect of each species in the Species List of
    Annexure 6;
    (e) any fish during the closed-season listed in respect of each species in the Species List of Annexure 6.
    (16) The holder of a recreational fishing permit endorsed for marine aquarium fish must:
    (a) immediately transfer all fish caught in terms of this permit to a saltwater aquarium or holding facility of sufficient capacity
    to sustain the lives of the fish.
    (b) keep a log-book indicating all additions to the aquarium (including those bred or hatched in the aquarium) and losses,
    indicating the species, origin, and cause of loss.
    "
