    Hi All

I am looking to set up my new 1.2 metre. I managed to find an online pic of an africa backwater tank that used peat moss as a substrate. Does any body know where I can get hold of pet moss and secondly can horticultural peat moss be used if it has been boiled to remove additives as this is readily available in PE.

    Thanks
    Luke

I dont know where you can find it but there is another option. I am using mineralised top soil as a substrate and it works wonders! I used it in my 15 gallon first and my plants grew like mad!!! Google "how to use topsoil as an aquarium substrate" and it tells you how to prepare it so its safe. Just a suggestion unless you are stuck on peat moss.

You can also use palm peat from stark ayres, works nice.

Peat moss as a substrate on its own wont work. It will float and cloud the water. Peat needs to be capped with sand or other gravel. The same goes for palm fibre peat.

@Africa aquatic, try the nursery on William Moffat. I cant remember the name now but I recently bought 2 bags of Canadian peat from them and they were the only nursery in PE where I could find any.

Peat or PFP can be made to sink by boiling it. It will not cloud the water, but will give it a brownish tinge. I use peat and PFP daily to breed Nothobranchius.

    Hi

I have decided to go the mineralised topsoil route and have soil soaking at the moment. Looking forward to seeing it set up with its african oddballs. Thank you to everybody for the input.
