You would be surprised what is going on in the back ground.... The plant blacklist was actually updated 4 or 5 years ago..... I believe there is a revised draft being looked at the moment.

Yes, I would be surprised. I have researched the black list intensely, I even emailed Helen Zille (with no response :)). Seen that draft list (and downloaded it a while ago) - with no movement on it at all in years.

So lets import this stuff quickly - I'm willing to form part of a group keen on the plant.

We will have to request a fellow international fish keeper to sell us some. I have registered on some forums where they are selling off excess trimmed stock to friends. Here's hoping @BBQ

    Hi Pauline,

I do not want to sound like a stick in the mud, but that plant has an extremely HIGH invasive potential, and I would strongly advise against importing it. It has the potential of becoming another Eichhornia type pest. In the Eastern Cape there was a very serious invasion of the Kowie river, if I remember correctly, with a surface plant called Azolla filiculoides. It almost led to the extinction of a fish that is distantly related to gouramis, the Eastern Cape Rocky, Sandelia bainsii, and the German hobbyist organization for labyrinth fishes channeled a lot of their societies monies into clearing the river of this plant, so I do not think that you want to be held responsible for another one of these disasters.

    Just my 2c worth,

    Dirk

I don't want to be a stick in the mud here... but as far as a understand, even if the plant isn't on the blacklist, doesnt necessarily mean you can import it. Remember, besides needing an import permit which you want get at the moment, plants need to be on the WHITE list.

WOW - my first controversial thread!

Just for the record to those who don't know me: I am not an irresponsible fishkeeper nor plantkeeper.

    Continue ...

goodness me people - I have not imported anything illegal and not intending to do anything illegal. I am investigating options that is all. You can all breathe ...
Obviously all imports into the country, go through controls, customs inspections, permits, documentation, etc.

They are nice plants and I'm sure many people would love to have them in their tanks, we are here to find out how we can obtain them (LEGALLY) - so if ebay and/or other forums are illegal, then so be it. But this information has to be and is being investigated.

I wish all the people who frequent this forum lived and procreated in South Africa - our stats would be at an all time low if the same effort was put into preventing crime in our neighbourhoods and streets. My gosh. :)

Im not saying it isn't on the whitelist. Just saying that if it isn't on there, you may not import it. I don't know where to source the whitelist from.

Pauline - just because you are not aware of movement within the Department of Agriculture with regards to plant permits doesn't mean "there is no such thing". They are in the process of revising the plant import conditions and lists. A similar process to the fish import permits was suggested and there is currently a draft "white list" in circulation which was sent to interested parties.
