    Hey all

Are there any paradise gourami breeders here?

Our pair surprised us on day 2 of having them by spawning in our community tank. As we have bred email Gouramies and Betta we have an idea but it would be better conversing with someone who have bred these specifically before.

Hi to raise the fry you must let them bread in their own tank .the male and female will look after the eggs .and after thy hatch you can remove the parents .feed the fry baby fish foods from lfm or fine egg yellow.

They are pretty straightforward to raise. What works for bettas will work for them, too. The fry are more robust and can take larger food sooner than bettas. If the pair is comfortable with each other, then it is not a bad idea to spawn them in an outside pond. We kept them outside year-round in Pietermaritzburg, and they bred hundreds of fry every year, which I just gave away. Outside ponds teem with infusoria and rotifers, so it is not necessary to worry about feeding the fry until they are 1 cm or so in size. Obviously, the pond must have a chance to mature first.

Yes and no. Many of the smaller gouramis have very small fry, and you have to start them off on green water and microworms first, then move on to BBS. And several of the gouramis are more sensitive to water quality and temperature than paradise fish. The opercularis is not strictly only a tropical species, and easily survives winter temperatures in the low teens. Some of the other Macropodus species can even survive temperatures close to freezing. In my personal experience, I once had a heater malfunction, and the temperature shot to 38 °C. It killed every fish in the tank, but my paradise fish survived. So they really are temperature hardy, and will breed at lower temperatures than most of the Trichogaster and related species. When it comes to feeding, they are also less finicky and easier to condition. Some of the gouramis are quite difficult in that regard, and require strictly high quality live food. In the end, you really have to familiarise yourself with the requirements of the particular species that you are trying to breed.

(As a consequence of their hardiness, paradise fish are excellent candidates to become invasive, and we should take care to contain them in especially the warmer parts of the country.)
