Pangasius

Hi All,

Just curious is all, just want to know if there is a difference between the Hi-Fin Pangasius and the Pangasius. I see some LPS have both these fish under the two names i mentioned...i couldn't see a visible difference when i was there

 

I think the one has a longer fin and gets a bit bigger than the other one

 

The 'regular' Pangasius - the one that is more streamlined and has a 'sheen' to it's body - is known scientifically as Pangasius hypophthalmus, which normally grows to just over a meter in the wild. In captivity, they rarely exceed 50cm due to tank size constraints and sometimes incorrect diet.

The so-called Hi-fin Pangasius are Pangasius sanitwongsei. It is the fish with a much larger dorsal fin and bigger (wider) mouth They grow significantly larger (over 2 meters), and are by far the most unsuitable aquarium fish that I've ever come across. Besides their size, they are active schooling fish, therefore needing the space that only a few public aquariums could ever provide. Many of these fish end up having stunted growth, and die at a young age (less than 10 years).
